a rogue virus out there causing about 10% of the cases. >> reporter: most doctors recommend the vaccine to prevent other strains. in california, experts say there are scattered outbreaks including here in the bay area. and they expect the cases to increase in the coming weeks. already, 41 states have reported widespread flu activity. and at least two people in california have died from flu complications. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. there was a warning right before a tanker scraped a bay bridge tower in the fog. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is on treasure island with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the investigation continues. you can see the boat right off treasure island where i'm standing. the coast guard says its vessel traffic service sent a warning to the bar pilot right before the tanker grazed one of the bridge's towers. the overseas reymar hit the bay

bridge on monday morning. more like a scrape actually. and according to state records, the captain, guy kleess, was involved in three previous scrapes in his career all minor. in august of 2009 his ship grounded in the sacramento river. two days later he damaged a dock at the port of stockton. and in may 2010 he was supervising a trainee on a tugboat that hit the richmond harbor -- hit the bottom, rather, in the richmond harbor. that was out of about 1100 trips he made throughout his career. >> i don't think you can go through a career without having some interaction with the bottom or other vests else. >> reporter: captain kleess passed an alcohol test. we are waiting for word on his drug test. he is on paid leave as the investigation. we don't know how long the ship will stay in the bay. live on treasure island, anne makovec cbs 5.

>> an east bay man met his match and maker during an attempted burglary at an apartment complex in pittsburg. a man killed the burglar in his home. police spent 12 hours processing the crime scene. it started around 10:30 yesterday morning. a 29-year-old man heard somebody at the front door trying to get in. so he went for his weapon. >> reached back to his bedroom and reached for a loaded firearm. by the time he makes it back to the front door, he is confronted by the suspect who is now inside his house. >> there was a fight between the homeowner and the 54-year- old intruder who carried a replica gun and both men lost their weapons. that's when the homeowner grabbed a knife and stabbed the burglar in the back. the dead man had a long rap sheet including burglaries. police are questioning two other people who may have also been involved. this morning, a reward will be announced for the return of a valuable artifact stolen from the oakland museum.

police say a thief broke into the museum monday and stole a historic gold box worth more than $800,000. oakland police and mayor jean quan will join museum officials to announce the reward at 9:30 this morning. this is the second time in two months someone broke into this museum. the water is back on at a bay area hospital disrupted by an apparent pipe problem. alta bates medical center in oakland declared a code dry for the building yesterday. that means the hospital halted almost all water use. during the time all the surgeries were put on hold and no one could flush toilets or turn on any taps. the problem, a plumbing failure. the code dry lasted for more than four hours. boeing's state-of-the-art 787 dreamliner is under scrutiny after two incidents involving the passenger planes in boston this week. the latest was yesterday when a japan airlines jet leaked fuel while taxiing at logan international airport. it followed an electrical fire on another plane monday after

passengers disembarked following a flight from tokyo. but cbs aviation analyst captain chesley sullenberger says it's too soon to judge the plane. >> there are some things that, unfortunately, are inevitably discovered during the real world of operational airline flying. >> the 787 dreamliner will make its bay area debut friday at mineta international airport when all nippon airways launches its nonstop service between san jose and tokyo. san jose by the way is going to experiment with letting some restaurants overflow on the street. they are called parklets or curb cafes. the idea is to let restaurants pay for the right to use parking spaces in front of the restaurants to expand their businesses. restaurants would be able to build platforms for outdoor dining. one restaurant owner expects his business to jump by 15 to 20%. >> this is a huge trend. everybody is moving on outdoor dining kind of taking back some

of the streets and parking lots and sidewalks. >> one year pilot program got unanimous support from the city council last night. it's modeled after a similar plan that has created 42 parklets here in san francisco. this morning, vice president joe biden is talking about ways to curb gun violence. biden is meeting with victims groups and gun safety organizations to discuss gun control policy plans in the wake of the newtown school shooting. tomorrow biden will meet with the national rifle association and other gun owner groups. president obama wants biden to hear about the policy plans by the end of the month. the obama administration says when american troops pull out of afghanistan at the end of the neck year, the u.s. could pull out all of them. white house officials say they are considering the so-called zero option which would bring home every u.s. soldier. this despite the pentagon's view that some troops need to stay to keep a lid on al qaeda. 4:37 now.

for the continental united states, 2012 was the hottest year on record. that's according to government scientists. average temperature was 55.3 degrees. that broke the old record set in 1998 by one degree. but if you wake up this morning, you would never know. 37 degrees out in the east bay. >> i know. it's chilly, lawrence. >> now we have a chance of some snow maybe down to 1500 feet by tomorrow morning. so yeah, we have some big chance coming our way. even a chance of rain developing outside today. here's the latest on our satellite image. you can see the cold front on final approach as it's headed toward the bay area. you can see showers beginning to move into far northern california but it will take a while for it to get here not until the afternoon before we see rain picking up. if you are heading outside today we have dense fog in some of the valleys so watch out for that. visibility again down less than a quarter mile inland, 38 degrees in concord. 39 santa rosa. 44 san jose. this afternoon, highs will be cooler. those clouds will be rolling in. there will be a chance of showers, highs in the 50s

outside. much cooler for tomorrow, as well. all right. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. just your overnight roadwork is all that's going on out there, no accidents, no big incidents. so this is what it looks like now towards the bay bridge toll plaza. various lanes blocked will be blocked on the incline section of the bridge towards the center anchorage scheduled to wrap up at 5 a.m. also lower deck roadwork out there, as well. san mateo bridge is moving fine. westbound and eastbound 92 should be about a 14 minute trip across that span between hayward and the peninsula. and to our maps now, 880 various lanes blocked near 66 near the coliseum up towards downtown but it's not impacting the drive time. in fact, all of your drive times free and clear. 880 and 237 in the clear. towards the south bay 101 and 280 and the guadalupe parkway all at top speeds. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. some bay area headlines. san jose investigators are looking into the cause of a

garage fire in the city's luna park neighborhood. it was reported about 7:30 last night at a home near east taylor and north 15th street. neighbors initially feared someone might have been in the garage, but it turns out that was not the case. no one was injured. but the garage, three vehicles and a boat were destroyed. repairs now under way at the oakland unified school district headquarters which got flooded. someone apparently left a tap open in a custodian closet all night causing all kinds of problems. the water damaged every floor of the building. staff will work out of another building during the clean-up. in palo alto, a close call at a landmark shopping center. a car drove into one of the stores at the town & country village on el camino real yesterday afternoon. no one was injured. police are still investigating though what happened. >> big problem these days. >> crazy. 4:39. usually copper thieves get away with a crime. >> but not at one bay area

it's video of a ten-foot-long giant squid. researchers... ese network here's a rare look of what's under the deep blue say video of a 10-foot-long giant squid. researchers working with the discovery channel say it's the first-ever footage of a live giant squid in the pacific ocean. that's pretty giant i'd say. biologists say the squid has suckers lined with sharp teeth and two very long tentacles as you can see in the video and the footage is part of an upcoming special, monster squid: the giant is real. >> whole lot of calamari there. >> i would not want to be near that. san francisco board of supervisors has elected david chu president for a third term.

the 42-year-old was re-elected by his fellow supervisors in a unanimous vote. he will appoint members of the committee and run the full meetings. each term lasts two years. the university of california has spent more than $4 million marking -- marketing online classes but so far only one student has taken a class. the university began offering 14 digital courses a year ago. unlike uc, stanford and harvard which offer online college courses for free, uc officials say the fact that their courses allow students to interact with professors and fellow students, more students will be signing up. so do you think you need a break from your stressful job? the website "careercast" put together a list of the least stressful jobs. number one, university professor followed by seamstress or tailor, medical records technician at 3. if you are a jeweler, you're in luck, you're number 4. then medical lab technician. apparently not having someone look over your shoulder is kind

of a big deal. >> i think so. >> not surprisingly jobs where no one is watching over your shoulder key to low blood pressure. the most stressful john obviously is being in the military. >> no kidding and for their families, too. >> absolutely. what do you think about meteorologist? >> highly stressful job when we have jobs coming or way. but university professor, that's interesting. is that because they have all our p.a.'s working for them? you take care of it. around the bay area, we have major changes coming in our direction. dense fog in the valleys again but by the afternoon we could have rain. the storm system sliding in now mostly cloudy out there and it looks like toward the afternoon, those clouds going to thicken up. that fog is going to disappear replaced by storm clouds so chance of showers toward the afternoon. and some cooler temperatures. in fact, this storm system diving in out of the gulf of alaska going to usher in much colder air outside. high pressure is going to move out and then we get into all that air from the gulf of

alaska diving in our direction so big changes ahead. we could even see some snow now down to 1500 feet in parts of the north bay by tomorrow morning. but the moisture is going to be limited. i want to show you that on our futurecast model right here. we have clouds rolling through early today. by the afternoon there's a chance of a few showers as the main cold front moves in. 2:00 in the north bay then across the rest of the bay area toward tomorrow and looks like by that time, you have that cold air in place, but more scattered showers showing up. so it will us. >> be pockets of moisture. so there is a chance you could see a couple of snowflakes in the mountains but the moisture will be limited. we are talking about temperatures being cool today only 57 degrees in sacramento. 49 in ukaih and 49 degrees in eureka. if you plan on heading around the bay area today, grab a jacket. it's going to stay cooler, 54 degrees in fremont. 56 in san jose. and about 55 degrees in san francisco. looking out over the next couple of days, boy, these temperatures really going to be cooling down. chance of showers by this afternoon. tomorrow maybe a lingering shower early on tomorrow morning. but the highs are going to struggle to get out of the 40s

and the low 50s by tomorrow afternoon. staying cool but dry on friday. over the weekend some partly cloudy skies, we'll keep those temperatures mainly in the 50s. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. outside we'll start you off with a look at the south bay this time. we sent our photographer down to 101 and mckee, and you can see all those headlights flowing nicely actually both directions at the limit. not seeing a whole lot of roadwork in san jose this morning. elsewhere, let's go out live towards 880 and 66 where there is some roadwork in lanes, maybe a little farther north of 66 all the way up towards 980. it is scheduled to wrap up here pretty shortly. but as you can see, near the oakland coliseum everything is moving at the limit. more roadwork could potentially slow you down this morning. not much. we're not seeing a lot of yellow on those traffic sensors. but it looks like both directions of the dumbarton bridge westbound should be wrapping up very shortly by

about 5:00. eastbound 84 lasts until 6:00. so a little while longer. in the meantime, here's a live look across the golden gate bridge. only one northbound 101 lane open until about 6:00 this morning. otherwise -- until 5:00 this morning, excuse me. southbound looks okay. they should be doing some lane changes right around this time of the morning. otherwise your drive time still free and clear for the east bay including 580. no delays through livermore or westbound or eastbound 24 heading through the caldecott tunnel. we're checking on areas of overnight roadwork on southbound 101 heading towards highway 92. but as you can see, across the span of the san mateo bridge things look good. mass transit is also on time. that is your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. 4:47 now. new this morning fisher-price is recalling 800,000 sleepers. the fabric cover comes in more than a dozen patterns and colors. the problem prompting the recall, mold can build up underneath the seat cushion

making your baby sick. fisher-price has had 600 records of that mold so far. -- 600 reports of that mold so far. a volunteer effort helped keep the lights from going out during holidays. in recent years copper thieves have hit the school district over the christmas break when schools were empty but this time members of the site safety team were on patrol. some even volunteered to be there on christmas day and two of them caught a suspect. >> trying to grab some copper, be prepared to be caught. >> if you do, then you have to deal with the site safety team. >> we got him cornered in and called vallejo pd and they came and arrested had i am. >> 29-year-old man is under arrest on various charges. well, you can call these guys reinforcements two when the seagull problem at the san francisco dump got to be too much, recology calling in sky and ground patrol. the birds scoop up human leftovers at recology san francisco so falcons like this guy have been pressed into service. their mission, to keep seagulls back from coming into the

buildings and interfering with equipment operators. they answer to the so-called birdman of recology. there he is. >> it works well. just your presence will scare all the seagulls away. >> birdman also has a border collie to help with seagulls on the ground. he also says the intention is not to kill or harm the seagulls, just keep them away. consumer debt rose to an all-time high last year. the reason, americans borrowed more to buy cars and attend college. the federal reserve says consumers increased their burrough by $16 billion in november compared with october. total burrough rose to a record $2.8 trillion. unemployment rates fell below 7% in more than half of the largest u.s. cities in november. that's the first time that's happen since the recession. 52 cities had rates below 5%. the numbers suggest steady job gains are benefitting most parts of the country. persistent fears about the

economy will likely keep a lot of business travelers grounded this year. a trade group expects business travel to decrease about 1%. at the same time, the group predicts travelers will spend about 5% more on air fare, hotels and car rentals. in this morning's healthwatch, patients with lung cancer may live longer if they can take drugs for high blood pressure or heart disease. researchers looked at hundreds of patients with lung cancer and found those taking beta blockers lived 22% longer than other patients. doctors believe beta blockers may interfere with the receptors on cells and keep that cancer from spreading. osteoarthritis patients with knee pain probably won't get any relief if they are taking vitamin d. researchers looked at 146 people with a common disorder and found vitamin d supplements didn't make a significant difference in pain or loss of cartilage. a new study linking depression to sweetened drinks

especially if you drink diet soda. researchers looked at 270,000 people. those who drank more than 4 cups of soda a day were 30% more likely to develop depression. scientists say coffee seems to have the opposite effect. that's a good thing. people who drank 4 cups a day were about 10% less likely to be depressed. time now 4:51. an unlikely combination of civil rights and religion. still ahead, what will soon happen in one of the nation's most prominent churches. >> a self-help guru has fears of his own. how he conquered them in the san francisco bay.

got word of a new accident south san jose. we'll update you on that coming up. >> thank you. wedding bells will soon be ringing for same-sex couples in washington, d.c. cathedral officials say the washington national cathedral will be among the first episcopal congregations to implement a new rite every marriage for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender members. they will announce the policy today. the cathedral has been used for presidential inaugural prayer services and state funeral services for president reagan and ford also held there. book signing events are a dime a dozen these days but one local author went to great lengths to make sure his was noticed. he swam to the book signing from treasure island to mainland san francisco. he says he had no concerns in the water but his destination was a little fearful. his book, the fear project, is a collection of information about fear gathered from

got right before the mishap. >> so much for dry weather. we have a cold front coming our way and we could see some rain and cold enough that maybe even a couple of snowflakes. we'll talk about that coming up. >> this is that accident we're watching now in south san jose on 101 involving an overturned car. we'll have all the details on this coming up. >> good morning. it's wednesday, january ninth. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:00 now. medical experts are concerned this flu season could be a doozy. the illness has already reached high levels in some parts of the country. cbs 5's cate caugiran joins us now from san francisco to explain why this might be happening. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. there is no doubt about it, flu season is here in northern california. so you might want to wash your hands, cover that cough, because doctors say it could get nasty. now, doctors here are already reporting busy emergency rooms more so than last year. but the situation is worse in other parts of the country, like chicago. emergency rooms there are

turning people away because they are filled with too many sickened patients and medical experts say the widespread sickness is likely because the current vaccine doesn't prevent one of the flu strains going around. but that does in the mean you should not get the shot. even if it doesn't pro haven't the infection completely, it can make the infection much less severe. >> reporter: in california we're seeing regional flu outbreaks and that means there are two outbreaks or we have had two outbreaks in two areas, one being the bay area. two people in the state have died as a result of flu complications. the good news is the current vaccine is a good match for our strains. you might want to get it as soon as possible because it takes two weeks to take effect. cate caugiran, cbs 5. somebody saw it coming just before a tanker scraped a tower on the bay bridge. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec over on treasure island reporting the pilot actually got a warning but it came too

late. >> reporter: that warning came from the u.s. coast guard's vessel traffic service. we don't know if the pilot himself heard the warning or if he just wasn't able to do anything about it or if something happened to be lost in translation. there is the tanker still anchored here off of treasure island as this investigation continues. it's been there since monday morning's crash and it turns out the man at the helm has had a few accidents in the past. captain guy kleess was involved in three previous scrapes all minor. in august 2009 his ship was grounded in the sacramento river. two days later he damaged a dock at the port of stockton. and then in may of 2010, he was supervising a trainee on a tugboat that hit the bottom in richmond's harbor. again, the investigation into what happened here is still under way. >> we're looking at the vessel itself. we'll consider the weather. we'll look at the gps. >> reporter: the ship scraped
